Car Phone Holders and the Law in the UK: Vent, Dashboard or Windscreen?

Most of us rely on our phones for sat-nav, music and hands-free calls in the car. The rules in the UK are strict, though, so where and how your phone is mounted really matters. This guide explains the law in plain English and helps you pick the right type of car phone holder.

What does UK law say about phones while driving?

Since March 2022 it has been illegal to hold and use a phone for almost any purpose while driving – including checking a map, scrolling music or taking a photo, even when you're stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. The penalty is 6 penalty points and a £200 fine, and new drivers within two years of passing can lose their licence.

You can use your phone hands-free for navigation, as long as it is:

  • secured in a holder, not held in your hand or resting on your lap;
  • set up before you start your journey; and
  • positioned so it doesn't block your view of the road or traffic.

Even when using it hands-free, the police can still stop you if they think you're distracted and not in control of the vehicle. Always check the latest guidance on GOV.UK and in the Highway Code.

Air vent holders

Vent holders clip onto a dashboard air vent, keeping the phone low and out of your line of sight. They're quick to fit and easy to move between cars.

  • Good for: everyday commuting, renting or sharing cars, keeping the windscreen clear.
  • Watch out for: round or very thin vent slats, and heavy phones in thick cases on bumpy roads.

Dashboard holders

Dashboard holders sit on top of the dash using a suction cup or adhesive pad. They put the screen closer to your eye line, so a glance at the map is quicker.

  • Good for: regular sat-nav users and drivers whose vents aren't suitable.
  • Watch out for: placement – keep it low and to the side so it doesn't block the road ahead.

Windscreen holders

Windscreen holders attach with a suction cup and often have a long, adjustable arm. They're popular with van and truck drivers. Because the windscreen is your main view of the road, mount it in the lower corner, never in the middle of the glass or in the area swept by the wipers.

Magnetic or clamp?

Magnetic holders let you attach and remove the phone with one hand – ideal if you're in and out of the car. Clamp-style holders grip the sides of the phone and suit heavier phones or thick cases. If your phone supports it, a wireless charging car holder keeps the battery topped up on long journeys without a trailing cable.

Quick checklist

  • Does it fit your car's vents or dashboard surface?
  • Will it hold your phone securely with its case on?
  • Can you place it low and out of your line of sight?
  • Do you want charging built in?
